With five wins from six games Round 8 proved a good weekend for the Club. The highlight of the round were the three top of the table clashes at Kingsway Reserve. It proved to be a salivating fixture with all sides aiming to consolidate their positions around the top of the ladder. The North League team were certainly on the ball, continuing their development and establishing their ascendency in the first half. Their passion and commitment saw them extend their lead as the game progressed, which proved too difficult for Kingsway to overcome. It was a great whole team effort and deserved of the win, defeating Kingsway: 13.11 (89) to 5.8 (38)! The Reserves game was similar to the Leagues, with both teams trying to create an ascendancy from the outset. In a good tussle North started to draw away in the first half and the gap increased as the game went on. It was a good polished team performance resulting in a well-earned win against a good Kingsway team: 10.13 (79) to 5.6 (36).
Our Drew Banfield Colts, knew they were in for a tough encounter against an equally placed Kingsway side. It was a tough game and certainly not for the faint hearted. Both teams threw everything they had at each other, making it an enthralling tussle. It was a game which could have gone either way, but eventually Kingsway prevailed as 5 point winners: 5.4 (34) to 3.11 (29). The outcome could have easily been reversed had our lads kicked straighter. However, that’s football! The lads still played well. Our Brett Jones Colts had a ‘must win’ game against West Coast at the Gil. Both teams were similarly placed on the ladder, but a loss could impact on chances of making the finals. From the outset West Coast prove more determined and North tended to chase kicks. However after a few stern words and reshuffles by a very animated and passionate coach, the game slowly began to turn in the second quarter. The lads got their ‘mojo’ back and started playing a quick moving open style across the field enabling them to rapidly deliver the ball to their strong forward line. From here the game was taken from West Coast and the longer it progressed the further North went ahead, deservedly winning: 12.17 (89) to 5.5 (35). It was a great win which enables them to set themselves for a crack at the top five.
The D2’s had another day out at home against Wanneroo. The Fourths continued their demolition of opponents with a masterful effort throughout the day. It was a pleasure to watch some of the past North stalwarts continue to play such a high standard. At no point was Wanneroo able to get into the game. Ultimately North ran out easy winners 26.11 (167) to 1.1 (7). It was a bit of a ‘Minno’ and ‘Squeak’ show with some 16 goals between them. The Thirds were challenged by Wanneroo, early in the first quarter. It was a credit to the away side to create some pressure, but once North settled into their game plan they began drawing away and established a match winning lead. The result was never in doubt, with North running out easy winners: 16.11 (107) to 5.2 (32). It must be said, in both D2 games, despite Norths dominance Wanneroo continued to fight on and played the games out in good spirits!! As one North Player commented after the games, “You have to have respect the opposition for holding their head high and never tossing in towel!”
It was a very good weekend for the Club and congratulations to all teams for their efforts!!
