North League Bounce Back to Winners List in Emphatic Style!
On a weekend when wins were precious and difficult across the grades, the League stood tall in a sizzling performance that will see them return to the top two positions on the ladder. Along with a strong performance by the Reserves, these were the only wins for the weekend, both being away games at Thornlie. The League team started strongly in a first quarter where efforts by both teams kept scores close. While North looked the dominant side, disposals and turnovers did not compliment sweeping ball movement which saw numerous forward entries, without much success. Contrastingly, errors were eliminated and cohesion across the whole field became the driving factor in a sizzling second quarter which saw North pile on eight unanswered goals and virtually ensure a win at the end of the game. The performance was exhilarating and perhaps their best for the season. North continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Thornlie again. However, injuries limited the interchange bench, with virtually no replacements in the last quarter. To their credit, the players readjusted, making on-field rotations to maintain dominance. It was a courageous performance that typified their spirit, skills, fitness and belief in themselves as a cohesive unit, running out comfortable winners: 20.7 (127) to 5.8 (38). Congratulations players and coaches!
The Reserves continued on their winning way and remained clear ladder leaders! They clearly were the dominant team on the day and pulled away from Thornlie, as the game progressed. It was a great whole team performance. The final score could have been even greater with fewer disposal and accuracy errors. Regardless, both players and coaches are to be congratulated and we look forward to them maintaining the winning streak. The end result was a conclusive victory for North: 15.18 (108) to 5.8 (38). The closest game from all other teams was away at Thornlie, by the Drew Banfield Colts. The game was an arm wrestle and the effort by the lads was commendable. Scores remained close throughout. It could have been anyone's game. Ultimately the end result came down to discipline and fewer errors that would win the game. Thornlie steadied in the final few minutes to snatch the game: 13.3 (81) to North 9.4 (58).
A power outage around the vicinity of North Fremantle, caused by a vehicle crashing into a power pole, was perhaps an omen of things to come for home teams. The D1 sides both knew their games against University, at home, would be challenging. The Thirds rose to the challenge worked hard throughout the game. However University were just too strong and ran out comfortable winners: 9.10 (64) to North 4.1 (25). The good thing is, there will come a time to atone! Despite their efforts, both the Fours: 1.5 (11) Uni 13.18 (93); and Brett Jones Colts 4.1 (25) Uni 14.14 (98) - were totally overwhelmed by a stronger opposition. Next week is another opportunity to turn things around. We move on.
